Remembrance

Mete Arca Alış’s “Remembrance” focuses on a surrealist story of an old woman existing in a medieval utopia, with a memory disorder that is making her forget more and more of her memories as days pass. The act of remembering works similarly to a musical technique called “retrograde” which is a variation technique used on melodies. Four instruments will be performing the variations of the set melodies, and slightly moving forward and backward from time to time within the piece. Throughout the piece, the main character’s conflict inside the story will be mimicked with the assistance of music, in order to assist a sense of empathy towards the old lady, to feel for her.
