Ying-Fang Shen

Ying-Fang Shen is a multi-disciplinary artist and Associate Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. Born and raised in Taiwan, her practice bridges East Asian aesthetic sensibilities with contemporary moving images. Shen’s work is defined by a deep fascination with authentic textures and the understated simplicity found in Asian folk art, which she translates into a personal visual language within her digital animations. Her creative process explores the intersection of motherhood, familial memory, and domesticity. By integrating a "handmade" digital touch, she captures the quiet, sensory rhythms of daily life through essential gestures. An internationally recognized creator, Shen has screened her animations at over 200 film festivals, including the Hiroshima International Animation Festival. Her work has received numerous accolades, including multiple Best Animation and Jury Awards across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Beyond filmmaking, she is an accomplished illustrator whose work continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
