Eighty years ago, on April 29, 1945, the last SS troops fled the German camp of Ravensbrück, the largest Nazi concentration camp for women. Among those held there was Suzanne Bouvard, a young woman from Brittany. During her deportation, she became friends with Simone Séailles, a Parisian resistance member. In life and in death, the two women bound their destinies together. After the war, Suzanne decided to rebuild her life by planting orchards. Rooting herself in the land was her way of healing and forgetting the hell of the camps.

A journalist at France 24, Stéphanie Trouillard specialises in the history of the Second World War. Four years after the release of the long-format documentary ‘The Smile of Auschwitz’ she offers a new investigation into this period of history to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the camps and the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Deportation. Claire Paccalin is a Franco-British video journalist at France 24. She produces reports and web documentaries on the Second World War alongside Stéphanie Trouillard, including ‘If I Ever Come Back: A French Schoolgirl’s Letters from the Holocaust’ and ‘Vél d'Hiv Roundup: The Last Witnesses’.
